In 1990, two families took a
holiday together in France. Little did we
realise that this would eventually lead to us purchasing a
holiday home in France together.
Every year for six years, we spent three weeks in France at the end of May and beginning of June on camping holidays in various parts of France. Over the six year period, we visited Normandy, Brittany, the Vendee, Ile de Paris, the Loire Valley, Picardy, the Auvergne and the Dordogne.
The children, who were of primary school age, were quite happy to be taken out of school for two weeks to accommodate what had become the annual three week pilgrimage to France at half-term and because Eurocamp offered the third week free of charge at off-peak time, our annual visit to France was excellent value for money.
However, when the children entered secondary school, it was obviously not practical to take them out of school any more and the cost of continuing with our three week holiday - but in the peak August period - suddenly became very expensive. So much so that one of us jokingly said "Good grief, we could buy a house for that!"
It was this chance remark which eventually led to some serious consideration being given as to whether this was indeed a realistic prospect or not.
